How to Best Optimize Your Website

Whether or not you're planning on heavily investing in a SEO campaign, it's important that you properly optimize your website for search engine traffic. Much of the core tactics like optimizing various onpage factors and building links can be found everywhere online. But there are many optimization tactics that many website owners are not using. Here is a list of things you can do to optimize your website in the best way possible beyond the basics. 

  1. Simplify and Organize Your Navigation Menu 
Your navigation menu is a big part of the user's browsing experience, especially for mobile users. That's why you want to simplify it as much as you can. You also want to make it user friendly by ensuring that it's easy to tap on mobile screens and open up the menu with ease. Organization is just as important if you have a large site. You want to ensure that all of your pages are properly categorized so that it's easy for users to find what they're looking for.
  1. Use Accelerated Mobile Pages 
Accelerated mobile pages is now a ranking factor for the mobile search results. This will allow your listing to sometimes appear on the top search results and also instantaneously load your website when a user clicks on it. This works by allowing Google to take a cached version of your website so that the loading process doesn't begin on the redirect. Be sure to also look at the various structured data options to enable AMP features in the search results.

Site speed is a big ranking factor for both normal and local search rankings. You want to do things like compress your images, minifying your code, deferring the loading of scripts, using browsing caching, and more. You may also opt to upgrade your web hosting plan to a dedicated plan or finding a new web hosting provider altogether for faster performance. Combine that with a CDN if your site is media heavy and you'll be sure to increase your rankings.

Many SEO experts have found that long form content ranks far better than shorter content. It was found that the top rankings usually had a word count of over 2000 words. While word count is not the only sole factor, it is a big part of it. The reason why is longer form content naturally includes many keywords related to the topic. Long form content also tends to be authoritative and many websites will link to it naturally. And it's not just links. Long form content tends to receive more social shares which is another ranking factor.

LSI stands for latent semantic indexing and it's simply describes what Google uses to find what a web page is about. For example, if you optimize for the keyword "apple", Google needs to know whether or not your page is about the fruit or the tech company. That's why the other words like iPhone, iPad, and MacBook will be required to help describe your page to Google. Tools like LSI Graph are free and helpful to finding related keywords for your main keywords. It's also a great way to discover new keywords for your SEO campaign.
  1. Link to Other Internal Pages 
While this isn't exactly an onpage optimization tactic, you will want to link to other internal pages in your content. The reason why is because it helps deeper pages get indexed and passes link value to these pages. This gives your other pages a better chance to rank in the search engine results for their own terms. It also helps to link out to authority pages as this shows Google that your page is all about providing value to the user.
  1. Use Structured Data 
By using various structured data options, you can enhance the way your website appears in Google's search results. For example, your listing can display additional links to product pages, lists of recipes, videos and more. You can also add to the profile of your website or business items such as phone number, hours, menu items, and social media profiles. Using structured data can enhance click throughs significantly. Remember, SEO is not just about rankings. You also have to get users to click on your listing after they enter the search term.
  1. Increase Engagement 
Making sure that your site doesn't have high abandonment rates is a big part of attaining high rankings. You want to be proactive and do whatever you can to increase your site's engagement. This includes using readable typography, breaking up large blocks of text, using attractive headers, adding clear call to actions, and using proper formatting. You'll also want to test different layouts and find out which ones result in the best results.

These are just some of the best optimization tactics you probably haven't heard of if you're new to SEO. The common onpage optimization factors are pretty straightforward and you'll be able to find information about them (headers, title tags, image alt tags, etc.) just about anywhere. These extra optimization tactics will help give your website an edge over your competitors as many of them won't be using them.
