Inverters: A Modern Day Innovation Story

In the 21st century, we are at an unheralded age of innovation. Almost everything that was discovered in the past few centuries has now been modernised and fabricated to be of use today. One of the most important discoveries of the early 20th century was electricity; and as times changed, the commonly used direct current (DC) was replaced by alternating current (AC). The wide abundance and easy storage of power in DC meant that a device was needed to do the necessary conversions and ease usage of appliances. When the inverter was first invented, it was game-changing. This device meant that a DC current of any type can be converted into an AC current of any wave and output power, depending on the design of the circuitry. Like any modern day device, it has multiple uses and some of those are:
  • DC power source converter: Its main purpose was to convert power from DC sources such as batteries or fuel cells to AC electricity.
  • Uninterruptable power supplies: UPS as it is colloquially referred to as, uses a battery and an inverter to supply AC power when the main power is not available. When the main power is available, a rectifier recharges the batteries using DC power. One can easily purchase a luminous high capacity inverter online.
  • Electric motor: Circuits are often designed to produce a variable output voltage and used within motor speed controllers. The power is derived from an AC source in an outlet like a wall plug. The circuitry and control of the circuit are adjusted to give the final output, which will determine the speed of the motor. Industrial motor-driven equipment, rail transport system, electric vehicles and power tools are some of the appliances that require this type of inverter.
  • Refrigerator compressor: A special usage of this speed control is for compressor motors that drives a variable refrigerant flow in the system. This can be used for either air conditioning or for refrigeration. These inverters are often used to regulate performance and functioning.
  • Power grid: Inverters which are grid-tied are used to feed into the distribution system. They transfer synchronously and have as little harmonic contact as possible. A detection system is required to detect the presence of utility power for safety reasons; this helps in not feeding power to the grids during a power outage.
  • Solar: A special type of inverter called the solar inverter is a balance of system part of a photovoltaic system. It is used in both grid-connected and off-grid systems. A newer version of this called a solar micro inverter, which is attached to individual panels is used nowadays. It is more efficient as it feeds the power directly to the grid.   • Miscellaneous: portable devices, power generating systems, electroshock weapons, HVDC power transmission and even induction heating. These are some examples where inverters have found a use.
It is a tell-tale sign of innovation of the 20th century that a common and simple device such as an inverter has found a variety of uses and is easily accessible to the common man.
